An air fryer is an appliance that is starting to appear in more and more kitchens all over the world. Let’s take a look at how to clean your air fryer so it can stay in good condition for as long as possible.

The trend towards healthy eating has contributed to the emergence of new appliances for cooking which means that you don’t have to use so much fat. Such is the case with air fryers, or hot air fryers, which are here to stay. Although the amount of oil used is much less, however, there is always some grease and residue left. That’s why we’re going to share some tips on how to clean your air fryer without damaging its components.

The truth is that when we cook french fries and don’t use much oil, it gives the impression that the machine hasn’t gotten dirty. But the remains of fat and food are still there. If we do not remove them, we may damage or deteriorate the fryer. Let’s take a look at how to clean an air fryer in the best way.

How to clean your air fryer: A step-by-step guide

There are different ways to clean this appliance. Therefore, your cleaning method depends on how you use your air fryer. We will go through three cleaning methods, from traditional to deep cleaning.

The traditional method: Clean after each use

The first thing you must do in any case is to unplug it from the wall as soon as you finish cooking. When the fryer has cooled, remove the removable parts such as the basket, plate, and grid from the main unit. Although there are many models, they all work in much the same way.

Then wash each of these parts with warm water, neutral soap, or a mild detergent and a sponge that does not scratch the parts. If there is stubborn dirt, you can remove it with a soft brush.

You can also let the parts sit and soak them in warm water and detergent for about 15 minutes. After the fat has softened, it is easier to remove it with a sponge.

While you wait for the parts to dry before assembling the air fryer, clean both the inside and the outside. Do this with a damp cloth with detergent and finally remove the soap residue with another damp cloth.

The quick way: When you don’t have much time

It is possible that you do not always have time to clean your fryer in the way we went through in the previous point, and you need to clean it a little quicker. For this option, simply pour soapy water into the basket and turn on the fryer and let it run on high for about 10 minutes.

In this way, the remains of fat and food will dissolve. When the program is finished, remove the basket, rinse it and then let it dry. Although this is not a recommended cleaning method every time you use the fryer, it can ensure that you have a clean fryer even when you are pressed for time.

The third method: is deep cleaning

It is recommended that you perform a deep cleaning from time to time to keep your air fryer in top condition. The first thing you should do is submerge the basket in warm water and a degreasing detergent for a few minutes. Then, after checking that the grease has softened, use a soft brush or sponge and soap to remove the remaining dirt. After this, rinse with plenty of water so that no soap or detergent remains.

If the fryer model allows it, you should remove the part that covers the grill so that you can clean it with a sponge or brush. It is common for pieces of food to fall on the grill and it is not something we often clean after each use. For this reason, we have included the cleaning of this also in this third method.

For models that do not provide easy access to the grill, you can try turning the fryer upside down to try to access this part. In any case, you can use a brush to help you reach the grill area and thus clean it more thoroughly from time to time.

How to clean your air fryer: some final maintenance tips

We want to emphasize that each of these three cleaning methods is useful. Not only that, but they are also necessary for the fryer to function properly. If pieces of food get stuck in any part of the fryer, the appliance may be damaged.

In addition, accumulated dirt can cause bacteria, and the use of the appliance will be slower and the energy consumption will then also be higher. Finally, we want to give you these tips for maintenance:

  • You can pour water with lemon or vinegar into the basket and run the fryer a little from time to time.
  • Never use metal or pointed utensils when cooking.
  • Scratchy cleaning tools such as metal scouring pads should not be used.
  • Disinfectants should be avoided as they may be unsuitable for use on surfaces that come into contact with food.
  • The most important thing is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and review all the information included in the user manual.
